Chantal Thomass: Lace and Rain, How to Care Properly
Anyone who owns an umbrella by Chantal Thomass carries a piece of French lingerie culture with them. The canopies often feature lace patterns, bows or floral motifs reminiscent of fine lingerie. But how do you keep these elaborate designs in shape after a downpour? Many owners wonder whether the delicate prints require special care or whether the umbrella can simply be left to dry like any other.
Canopy Material: Polyester with Print
Chantal Thomass models typically use high-quality polyester canopies onto which the characteristic design is printed or woven. Polyester dries quickly and retains its colour brilliance if you set the umbrella up open after use. The span is usually between 85 and 95 centimetres, with a weight of around 300 to 400 grams. Make sure that the canopy does not press against walls or furniture whilst drying, so that the print does not develop any abrasion marks.
Drying Without Creases
After rain, place the umbrella open in a stand or hang it by its loop on a hook. This allows residual water to distribute evenly and drain away without forming creases. Leave the umbrella in an airy location for at least two hours before closing it. Avoid direct heat from radiators or sunlight, as both can cause the print colours to fade or the fabric to become brittle.
Removing Stains and Dirt
If the canopy shows splashes or dust, wipe them off with a damp, soft cloth whilst the umbrella is still slightly wet. Use plain water without additives. For stubborn stains, a mild soapy solution applied with a sponge and then thoroughly rinsed off will help. Never rub dry, but gently pat the area and then allow the umbrella to dry completely.
Caring for Frame and Handle
The frame is usually made of steel or fibreglass with eight ribs that provide stability in wind. After each use, check whether rainwater has collected in the joints and wipe them dry. The handle may be made of plastic, lacquered wood or metal. Clean it with a damp cloth and dry it off so that no fingerprints or limescale marks remain. This preserves the elegant overall impression that distinguishes Designer umbrellas.
Storage Between Uses
Store the umbrella in a dry place, ideally hanging or standing in an umbrella stand. Avoid tight cupboards where moisture can accumulate. If you do not use the umbrella for a longer period, open it briefly every few weeks to air the canopy. This prevents mildew and keeps the material supple. A well-maintained Chantal Thomass umbrella retains its appearance for many seasons.
