Drying and Storing a Wet Umbrella Properly
After a rain shower, umbrellas often end up folded in a bag or placed dripping wet in a corner. But how do you dry a quality umbrella so that the frame and canopy remain undamaged? And where should you store it so that it functions perfectly the next time you need it? Proper care significantly extends its lifespan and preserves its appearance.
Why Immediate Drying Is Important
Moisture on the canopy can lead to mildew spots, discolouration or odour formation if left for extended periods. Metal parts on the frame, particularly at the joints and ribs, can rust if water is not dried off. The mechanism of an automatic folding umbrella also suffers when moisture penetrates the springs and sliders. The sooner you dry the umbrella after rain, the lower the risk to material and function.
How to Dry Your Umbrella Correctly
Open the umbrella fully and place it open in a well-ventilated location, ideally at room temperature. Avoid direct proximity to radiators or direct sunlight, as both can cause the canopy to fade or become brittle. A hallway, a bathroom with a window or a covered balcony are suitable. Leave the umbrella open for at least two to three hours until the canopy and frame are completely dry. Shake off excess water beforehand so that fewer drops fall on the floor.
Special Considerations for Different Materials
Polyester canopies dry faster than those made of silk or cotton. With Designer umbrellas featuring printed or coated fabrics, you should be particularly careful: do not rub the canopy dry, but let it air-dry. Frames made of fibreglass or aluminium are more resistant than those made of steel. Wooden handles should not remain wet for extended periods, as the wood may swell or crack. Wipe handles made of wood or leather with a soft cloth after the canopy has dried.
Storage After Drying
Only close the umbrella once it is completely dry. Then store it upright or hanging, not lying down under heavy objects. An umbrella stand or a hook on the coat rack are ideal. Ensure that the storage location is dry and well-ventilated. Damp cellar rooms or closed cupboards without air circulation promote mould and odour. For Umbrellas with protective covers, only put the cover on once the umbrella is completely dry.
Care for Long-Lasting Durability
Regularly check the ribs, joints and mechanism for wear or rust. A drop of sewing machine oil on the moving parts keeps the mechanism smooth. Remove stains on the canopy carefully with lukewarm water and mild soap, then allow to dry again. Never store the umbrella folded in a damp environment for extended periods. With this care, your umbrella will remain functional for years and look as good as new.
