Folding Umbrella in Backpack: Moisture and Other Items
Anyone who carries a folding umbrella in their backpack knows the problem: after the rain, the umbrella is wet, and in a closed backpack the moisture can transfer to laptop, documents or clothing. At the same time, the umbrella should remain easily accessible without damaging other items or being damaged itself. How can a wet folding umbrella be stored safely and practically in a backpack without moisture becoming a problem?
Use Protective Cover and External Pocket
The simplest solution is a separate protective cover made of water-repellent material. Many high-quality Pocket umbrellas come with a cover that shields moisture from the outside. Alternatively, sealable nylon or polyester bags are suitable, which you can find at specialist retailers. Even better: use an external pocket on the backpack, ideally on the side or front. There, residual moisture can evaporate without affecting contents in the main compartment.
Allow Umbrella to Drip Before Storing
Before packing the umbrella, you should shake it briefly and hold it open for a few seconds so that large water drops can run off. Only then close it and wrap the fastening strap loosely so that air can circulate. A tightly rolled, dripping wet umbrella remains moist longer and can cause mildew stains or odour inside the backpack. The frame also benefits from brief ventilation, especially with models featuring steel ribs.
Consider Material and Construction
High-quality Umbrellas have a canopy made of polyester or pongee fabric that allows water to bead off quickly and dries rapidly. Pay attention to the following features:
- Canopy with Teflon coating or similar waterproofing
- Frame made of fibreglass or aluminium, which is less susceptible to moisture than simple steel
- Automatic mechanism that locks firmly after closing and prevents accidental opening in the backpack
- Length between 28 and 32 centimetres when closed for compact storage
Choose Internal Compartment with Divider
Modern backpacks often offer a separate wet compartment with waterproof lining. If your backpack has one, use it consistently for the umbrella. Alternatively, you can use a laptop compartment with padded divider: umbrella on one side, sensitive electronics on the other. This maintains a barrier between moisture and valuable contents.
Regular Care After Carrying
As soon as you arrive home, remove the umbrella from the backpack and allow it to dry completely. Open it in a ventilated location, but not in direct proximity to heating, as intense heat can damage the waterproofing. Check the frame and joints for moisture and wipe them with a dry cloth if necessary. Such a routine considerably extends the lifespan of the umbrella and prevents unpleasant surprises during the next downpour.
