Jewellery in the Rain: What Water Does to Metal and Stones
When wearing necklaces, rings or earrings in rainy weather, many people wonder: does moisture damage my jewellery? Different materials do indeed react differently to water, and not every metal tolerates moisture equally well. Some alloys tarnish, other stones lose their lustre, and yet other materials remain completely unaffected. Understanding how rain affects jewellery allows you to take preventive measures and keep your favourite pieces beautiful for longer.
Precious Metals and Their Reaction to Moisture
Gold and platinum are among the noblest metals and practically do not oxidise. Pure gold with 750 or 585 hallmarks remains unchanged even with frequent contact with rainwater. Platinum likewise shows no signs of tarnishing. Silver, however, reacts more sensitively: it forms dark sulphide layers with sulphur compounds from the air, which develop more quickly in the presence of moisture. After a rain shower, you should therefore dry silver jewellery with a soft cloth to prevent tarnishing.
Alloys and Coated Surfaces
Costume jewellery often consists of base metals with thin gold or silver plating. Rainwater can attack these coatings, particularly when perspiration or cosmetics are involved. Brass and bronze oxidise when wet and form greenish patina. Stainless steel, on the other hand, remains largely rust-free, provided it is genuine stainless steel. Anyone wearing high-quality Jewellery should check after rain for water spots or discolouration and remove these promptly.
Gemstones and Their Sensitivity to Water
Hard gemstones such as diamonds, sapphires or rubies tolerate rainwater without problems. Their crystalline structure remains stable, and brief contact with moisture causes no harm. Porous or soft stones behave differently: turquoise, opal and pearls can alter their structure through water exposure. Pearls lose their lustre with frequent moisture because the organic layers swell. Opals tend to crack if they dry too quickly after rain. You should remove such sensitive stones during persistent rain or wear them beneath clothing.
Settings, Adhesives and Mechanical Connections
Not only the material itself, but also the workmanship determines water resistance. Glued stones can come loose with repeated contact with moisture, as many adhesives are not completely waterproof. Prong settings made of metal, however, hold reliably as long as the metal itself does not corrode. Clasps and hinges on bracelets or earrings should also be dried after rain to prevent moisture from settling in the gaps.
Practical Care After a Rain Shower
After a walk in the rain, the following procedure is recommended:
- Dab jewellery pieces with a lint-free microfibre cloth, do not rub
- Spread out necklaces and bracelets flat so all links can dry
- Polish silver with a silver cloth to prevent tarnishing
- Store sensitive stones separately in soft cloth
- Check clasps and hinges for moisture
When out and about in changeable weather, you can protect other personal items alongside your jewellery. High-quality Bags and accessories keep your wallet, mobile phone and keys safe from moisture, while a well-made umbrella ensures you stay dry yourself.
Material Selection for Rainy Days
If you know you will be spending extended time outdoors, it is best to choose jewellery made of stainless steel, gold or platinum with hard gemstones. This combination withstands moisture and requires only minimal care. For special occasions in uncertain weather, it is worth leaving sensitive pieces at home and opting for more robust alternatives. This way your jewellery remains beautiful for longer, and you need not worry about discolouration or damage.
