Transparent Umbrellas: Visibility, Safety and Cleaning

When carrying an umbrella in the rain, you want to stay protected while still seeing where you are going. Transparent canopies made of clear plastic promise exactly that: unobstructed forward vision, no dark fabric dome above your head. But how well does this work in everyday use? Which materials are employed, how do you care for the see-through surface after the rain, and what should you look for when purchasing?

Material and Construction of Transparent Canopies

Most see-through Umbrellas are made of PVC or POE, less commonly of polycarbonate. PVC is robust, remains flexible even in cold weather and can be welded easily. POE is considered more environmentally friendly, but tends to yellow more quickly under strong UV radiation. The frame is often made of fibreglass or steel, with the ribs running visibly beneath the clear film. Pay attention to cleanly finished seams and welded joints: otherwise moisture will penetrate and leave stains between the layers.

Visibility and Safety in Traffic

A transparent umbrella allows you to see ahead and to the side without having to tilt the umbrella. This is particularly helpful in dense pedestrian traffic or at intersections. The clear surface obscures neither traffic lights nor approaching vehicles. However, the inside tends to fog up in high humidity, similar to spectacles. A quick wipe with a microfibre cloth provides a remedy. Some manufacturers coat the film on the inside with an anti-fog layer, but the effect diminishes after a few months.

Cleaning After Use in Rain

Transparent canopies show water marks, dust and fingerprints more clearly than dark fabric. After use, open the umbrella fully and let it dry in a ventilated location. Wipe the outside with a damp, soft cloth; for stubborn stains, a drop of mild washing-up liquid is sufficient. Avoid abrasive cleaners, alcohol or acetone: they will permanently cloud the film. Stiff brushes also leave scratches that cannot be removed. Store the closed umbrella in a dry place and not in direct sunlight, so that the material remains supple.

Designs and Areas of Use

Transparent models are available as walking umbrellas and as Pocket umbrellas. Walking umbrellas achieve spans of 85 to 100 centimetres and offer good protection for head and shoulders. Pocket versions measure approximately 28 to 32 centimetres when folded and fit into any briefcase. However, the film on compact models is often thinner and therefore more susceptible to tears. Check the number of ribs before purchasing: eight ribs are considered the minimum standard for adequate stability in wind.

Durability and Typical Wear Points

Transparent films age more quickly than woven fabrics. UV light makes the material brittle, mechanical stress at the rib ends leads to tears. Check the connection points between film and frame regularly: this is where the bonding comes loose first. High-quality models use double-folded edges and reinforced corners. A well-maintained transparent umbrella will last two to three years with regular use before the film noticeably darkens or shows small tears.

What to Look for When Purchasing

Check the thickness of the film: it should be at least 0.3 millimetres to prevent the umbrella from tearing in the first gust of wind. Test the opening and closing mechanism several times: if the film gets caught between the ribs, creases and weak points will form. An ergonomically shaped handle made of wood or plastic sits securely in the hand, even when wet. Pay attention to even tension in the canopy: waves or slack areas indicate inferior workmanship.
