Umbrella and Glasses: Drops, Rim and Field of Vision

Anyone who wears glasses knows the problem: as soon as you open your umbrella in the rain, the lenses fog up or drops run over the rims. The umbrella edge obstructs your field of vision, you have to turn your head to see to the side. The combination of visual aid and rain protection requires some consideration so that you arrive at your destination dry and with clear vision.

Why Small Umbrellas Are Unsuitable for Glasses Wearers

A compact umbrella with a 90 centimetre span may protect the upper body, but lets rain through from the sides and front. Glasses wearers must hold the umbrella lower to protect the lenses, which further restricts the field of vision. Larger models with a 100 to 110 centimetre diameter offer more distance between the canopy and face. You can hold the umbrella higher without drops reaching your glasses, and maintain a clearer view ahead.

Transparent Panels for Better Orientation

Some Umbrellas feature transparent inserts made of PVC or polycarbonate in the front section of the canopy. These transparent panels allow you to look upwards and forwards through the umbrella without lifting the rim. Particularly in city traffic or at junctions, this considerably improves orientation. Ensure that the material is UV-resistant so that it does not yellow or become brittle after a short time.

Walking Umbrella or Folding Umbrella: A Question of Handling

Walking umbrellas can be opened and held with one hand, leaving the other free to clean or adjust your glasses. Pocket umbrellas usually require both hands to open, but offer mobility in return. If you frequently open and close the umbrella because you are moving between buildings, an automatic folding umbrella with open-close function may be useful. Before purchasing, check whether the mechanism operates smoothly without requiring you to remove your glasses to use both hands.

Avoiding Fogged Lenses

Fogging occurs when warm breath meets cool lenses. An umbrella with sufficient diameter not only keeps rain off, but also creates distance between your face and the wet canopy. Avoid tilting the umbrella too steeply forward, as moisture will then reach your glasses directly. Also helpful are:

  • Anti-fog cloths or sprays for the lenses before leaving the house
  • A slightly backward-tilted umbrella, so that air can circulate in front of your face
  • Regular shaking of the umbrella to remove drops from the rim

Care After Use

Shake out the umbrella after use and leave it open to dry so that no moisture collects in the fabric. Clean transparent panels with a soft cloth to avoid scratches. A well-maintained umbrella retains its shape and function for years, so that you can rely on clear vision and dry lenses.
