Umbrella for Two People: Which Size Is Sufficient
When two people want to walk under one umbrella, the question of the right span arises. Too small, and one person gets wet. Too large, and the umbrella becomes heavy and unwieldy. Which dimensions make sense so that both people stay dry without the handling becoming impractical? The answer depends on body build, walking distance between people, and wind conditions.
Minimum Span for Two Adults
For two people of average build, a span of at least 120 centimetres is considered a guideline. Better still are 130 to 140 centimetres, so that the shoulders also remain protected. With models under 120 centimetres, both people must stand close together, which is often impractical in everyday life. Make sure that the umbrella is not only wide but also curved deeply enough so that rainwater does not drip onto clothing from the sides.
Walking Umbrella or Folding Umbrella
For two people, walking umbrellas are considerably better suited than folding umbrellas. Walking umbrellas reach spans of 130 centimetres and more, while folding umbrellas usually end at 100 to 110 centimetres. A walking umbrella can also be held more stably, which is important in wind. The higher weight of 400 to 600 grams is less significant when the umbrella is carried anyway and does not need to be stowed in a bag. High-quality Umbrellas with reinforced frames made of fibreglass or steel offer the necessary stability here.
Number of Ribs and Wind Resistance
A large umbrella for two people should have at least eight ribs, better still ten or twelve. More ribs mean more even tension of the canopy and better wind stability. Models with flexible fibreglass ribs yield in gusts without breaking. The weight increases with the number of ribs but rarely exceeds 650 grams in good models. A sturdy handle, whether curved or straight, makes holding easier over longer periods.
Material and Care After Rain
The canopy should be made of water-repellent polyester or coated nylon. These materials dry quickly and remain dimensionally stable. After use, leave the umbrella open to dry so that no mildew forms. Check the frame occasionally for loose screws and treat moving parts with a drop of oil if necessary. This way, the umbrella remains reliable for years.
Special Occasions and Appearance
For festive occasions such as a Wedding, there are models with particularly elegant appearance: pagoda umbrellas with curved canopy, umbrellas with lace trim or in classic white. Here too: a span of at least 130 centimetres ensures that bride and groom or two guests are protected together. Such umbrellas combine function and aesthetics without sacrificing stability.
