The Umbrella in the Hotel Room: Where to Put It After the Rain

Anyone travelling on business or holiday knows the situation: the umbrella is soaking wet, but the hotel room is small and storage space is limited. Where is the best place to dry the umbrella without ruining furniture or carpet? And how do you prevent mildew or odours from setting into the fabric? Proper storage after rain determines the lifespan of your umbrella.

The Bathroom as First Choice

In most hotel rooms, the bathroom offers the most practical solution. Place the open umbrella in the shower or bathtub so that water drips directly into the drain. Tiles and ceramics tolerate moisture without problems, and the humidity in the bathroom does not harm the umbrella. Leave the umbrella open for at least three to four hours, or overnight after heavy rain. A slightly open window or the ventilation fan switched on will speed up the drying process.

Never Pack Away Closed

The most common mistake: folding up the wet umbrella and putting it in your bag. When closed, moisture cannot escape, the fabric begins to smell and mould spores find ideal conditions. This applies particularly to Pocket umbrellas, which are often transported in an additional cover. A damp umbrella has no place in the hotel wardrobe or travel bag either. Only when the canopy and frame are completely dry may you fold the umbrella.

Alternative Drying Places in the Room

If the bathroom is occupied or you want to keep the umbrella in sight, other locations are suitable. Lean the open stick umbrella against the radiator, but not directly on the hot heater. A distance of about ten centimetres protects the fabric from heat damage. On tiled balconies or near the window, the umbrella also dries well. Place a towel underneath if you must set the umbrella on carpet or parquet. Avoid upholstered furniture and beds as storage surfaces.

Do Not Forget Frame and Handle

Not only the canopy needs care after rain. Wipe the frame with a dry cloth, especially the joints and spring mechanisms. Water collects here, which can lead to rust on metal parts. The handle, whether made of wood, leather or plastic, should also be rubbed dry. Wooden handles can swell with prolonged moisture, leather becomes stained. This simple measure considerably extends the lifespan of all umbrella components.

Check Before Departure

Before checkout, check whether the umbrella is really dry. Open and close it once as a test. If the fabric still feels cool or clammy, allow it more hours. If necessary, pack a towel with the umbrella to continue drying on the go. A completely dried umbrella survives transport in the suitcase or travel bag without damage and is immediately ready for use at the next downpour.
