Umbrellas at Concerts: Cloakroom, Seating and Intervals
When attending a concert on a rainy day, you face practical questions: Where to put your wet umbrella during the performance? May you take it into the auditorium? And how do you prevent your high-quality companion from being damaged or lost? Proper preparation ensures that you can enjoy the music without worrying about your accessory.
Using the Cloakroom or Umbrella Stand
Most concert halls offer a cloakroom with separate umbrella stands. When you hand in your umbrella there, you receive a token and collect it after the event. Make sure the umbrella is closed and as dry as possible before handing it in. For high-quality models with distinctive handles or patterns, it is advisable to remember the position in the stand. Some venues also provide open stands in the foyer where you can place the umbrella yourself.
What Applies in the Concert Hall Itself
You are generally not permitted to take your umbrella into the auditorium. The house rules of most venues prohibit this for reasons of space and safety. A stick umbrella with a length of 100 centimetres would obstruct the space between rows of seats, and a wet cover could damage clothing or upholstery. Even folded pocket umbrellas should be left in the cloakroom, as they may slip or cause noise during the performance. Focus on the music, your umbrella is safely stored.
Compact Models for Your Bag
If you want to be on the safe side, choose a pocket umbrella with a small pack size. Models with three segments fold down to 25 to 30 centimetres and fit into a handbag or rucksack. Look for a weight under 300 grams and a cover made of quick-drying synthetic fibre. High-quality Umbrellas in pocket size offer a span of 90 centimetres and eight ribs for adequate stability despite their compact dimensions. This way you have your accessory with you without it being obtrusive.
Care After the Concert Visit
Collect your umbrella promptly after the event and open it fully at home. Allow the cover to air dry, ideally overnight in a well-ventilated room. Shake off water droplets beforehand and wipe the frame with a dry cloth. For stick umbrellas with wooden handles, ensure that the handle does not remain damp for extended periods. Only when the umbrella is completely dry should you close it again and store it away.
Alternative When the Cloakroom is Full
In rare cases, the cloakroom may be overcrowded or closed. In such situations, ask the staff about an umbrella stand in the foyer or whether you may leave the umbrella in a secure location. Some venues permit umbrellas to be placed outside the auditorium next to the entrance. Avoid leaving your umbrella unattended in public areas. A high-quality model with distinctive design deserves attention, even when you are seated in the auditorium.
