Umbrellas at the Theatre: Cloakroom, Seating Row and Intervals
When attending an evening theatre performance, visitors often face practical questions: must the umbrella be left at the cloakroom? May one take it into the auditorium? And how should one behave during the interval if the umbrella is briefly needed? The answer depends on the house rules, the size of the umbrella and one's own conduct.
Cloakroom Requirement in Most Venues
Most theatres require that full-length umbrellas be left at the cloakroom. The reason lies in safety and the lack of space between seating rows. A full-length umbrella with a span of 100 to 110 centimetres and a length of 85 to 95 centimetres takes up considerable room and can become a tripping hazard when standing up or allowing other visitors to pass. There is also the risk that wet umbrellas may soil the clothing or upholstery of neighbouring patrons. The cloakroom provides a secure place where the umbrella can dry without disturbing others.
Compact Umbrellas as an Alternative
Those who prefer to keep their umbrella with them should choose a compact folding model. Models with a closed length of 25 to 30 centimetres fit into any handbag or jacket pocket and need not be checked. Ensure that the umbrella is as dry as possible before entering the auditorium. A brief shake in the foyer or entrance area prevents drops from falling onto the floor or seats. High-quality Umbrellas with water-repellent canopies made of polyester or pongee silk dry more quickly and are easier to handle.
Conduct in the Seating Row
If you take a compact umbrella into the auditorium, it is best to place it under your seat or in the side pocket of your bag. Avoid placing the umbrella on your lap or hanging it on the armrest, as it may easily fall or obstruct your neighbour. During the performance, the umbrella should remain invisibly and silently stowed. Models with automatic opening mechanisms can be loud if accidentally triggered, so caution is advised.
Intervals and Exit
During the interval, you may naturally retrieve your umbrella if you wish to leave the theatre briefly. However, bear in mind that the cloakroom is often crowded during intervals and collecting a checked umbrella takes time. Those who wish to depart promptly after the performance should consider this when making their decision. Elegant Designer umbrellas with distinctive handles made of wood or acrylic are easier to identify at the cloakroom than plain standard models.
Care After the Theatre Visit
After your visit, you should allow the umbrella to dry open at home, even if it is only slightly damp. Moisture that remains when closed can attack the frame made of steel or fibreglass and damage the canopy. Ensure that the umbrella is not placed near radiators, as direct heat causes the material to become brittle. A well-maintained umbrella will accompany you to cultural occasions for many years.
