Wedding Umbrellas for Guests: Quantity, Size and Coordination
When planning an outdoor wedding, you think about flowers, decoration and the perfect lighting. But what happens if unexpected rain accompanies the celebration? To ensure your guests stay dry and the atmosphere does not suffer, it is worth preparing with suitable umbrellas. The right quantity, a well-considered size and harmonious coordination with the wedding concept make the difference between improvised emergency solutions and a stylish appearance.
How Many Umbrellas Should You Provide?
As a rule of thumb: plan for approximately half of your guests to have an umbrella. For 80 guests, that would be 40 umbrellas. This number takes into account that many couples share an umbrella and not all guests are outdoors at the same time. If the ceremony or reception takes place entirely outside, you should increase the quantity to two thirds. This way you avoid guests having to wait or standing in the rain.
Which Size Is Suitable for Wedding Guests?
Walking umbrellas with a span between 100 and 110 centimetres provide sufficient protection for two people and look elegant in photographs. Look for a frame with at least eight ribs that remains stable even in gusty winds. The weight should be between 400 and 600 grams, so the umbrellas are comfortable to carry yet robust enough for extended use. A straight handle made of wood or plastic makes holding easier and suits the festive occasion.
Colour and Style Coordination
The umbrellas should fit into the colour scheme of your celebration without being obtrusive. Classic white or cream harmonises with almost any decoration and does not distract from the bridal couple in photographs. Pastel shades such as rose, mint or light blue add subtle accents. Those planning more boldly choose a vibrant colour that is repeated in bouquets or tablecloths. Ensure that the canopy is made of polyester or pongee silk, both materials dry quickly and retain their shape.
Material and Construction for Outdoor Use
For a Wedding outdoors, frames made of fibreglass or steel are recommended, which withstand wind speeds of up to approximately 60 kilometres per hour. The canopy should be water-repellent treated so that guests remain dry even in prolonged rain. Check before the celebration whether the umbrellas open easily, an automatic mechanism facilitates handling. After the event, you should leave the umbrellas open to dry to avoid mildew stains.
Practical Organisation on the Wedding Day
Place the Umbrellas in a clearly visible location, such as at the entrance to the ceremony or next to the reception area. A decorative stand or a labelled box helps guests to help themselves. Plan for one person to distribute the umbrellas when rain begins or at least to point them out. After the celebration, you can collect the umbrellas and have them cleaned if necessary before storing them for future occasions or giving them to guests as a keepsake.
Care and Storage After the Celebration
Allow the umbrellas to dry completely after use before folding them. Moisture when closed leads to mould and unpleasant odours. Store the umbrellas in a dry, ventilated place. Should stains appear on the canopy, a damp cloth with mild soap is usually sufficient. Avoid aggressive cleaning agents that could damage the water-repellent treatment. Check the frame and mechanism for damage before the next use.
