Umbrella in the Car: Where to Put It When Wet
You get into your car after a downpour, holding a dripping umbrella. Where to put it now? Placing it on the passenger seat is not an option without soaking the upholstery or floor mat. Simply tossing it in the boot is no solution if you need to get out again shortly. The question of the right place for a wet umbrella in the vehicle concerns everyone who travels in the rain.
The Footwell as First Choice
The footwell in front of the passenger seat is suitable because there is usually a rubber mat that can handle water. Stand the closed umbrella upright between the seat and dashboard or lay it flat on the mat. With Pocket umbrellas, the space next to the handbrake or in the centre console is often sufficient. Make sure the umbrella cannot slide against the pedals and does not obstruct visibility.
Carry a Protective Cover or Plastic Bag
A waterproof cover catches drips and protects seats and trim. Many high-quality models come with a cover that you can reuse after each use. Alternatively, a simple plastic bag from the supermarket or a reusable bag made of coated fabric will do. It is important to remove the umbrella from the cover at home and let it dry completely so that the frame and canopy do not suffer damage.
Boot Only for Longer Journeys
For short distances, the boot is impractical because you will need the umbrella again at the next stop. On longer journeys or when transporting several Umbrellas, it is best to place them on an old blanket or in a shallow tray. This keeps the rest of your luggage dry. Avoid placing heavy objects on the umbrella so that the ribs and cover do not bend.
Shake Out Before Getting In
Shake the umbrella vigorously before getting into the car. Open and close it once to shake off excess water droplets. This significantly reduces moisture in the vehicle. With stick umbrellas with a straight handle, you can wipe the water off the canopy with a gentle swing. This simple measure saves you cleaning effort later and protects the interior.
Do Not Forget to Dry After the Journey
Leave the umbrella open in an airy place to dry after arrival. Never put it away folded in a corner or back in the car. Moisture when closed leads to mildew on the canopy and rust on the frame. A dry umbrella is ready for immediate use at the next downpour and retains its shape for years.
